Brazil asks for duty cut on chicken

Brazil has asked India to cut import taxes on chicken and chicken products so that it can capitalise on the rising demand for poultry and poultry products as incomes rise and food habits evolve in the Indian food market. Currently, India has an import tax of 100% on chicken products and a 30% duty on whole chickens, which is deemed constraining by exporting countries like  Brazil and the US to gain a foothold in the market, where the poultry industry is growing at more than 10% a year. Brazilian Agriculture Minister Tereza Cristina Dias also said during her visit to India that it would like to import an array of goods from the latter. India’s Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution Shri Ram Vilas Paswan has asked Dias to let India export corn seeds and onions to Brazil as a reciprocal measure, since India has allowed Brazil to sell commodities such as corn, cotton and soybean.
