“Priority will be given to cities having no organised bus service,” Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Singh Thakur said.
Thakur stated that the National Urban Transport Policy has also emphasized the enhancement of non-motorized transportation infrastructure in the country.
He announced that a total of 10,000 electric buses (e-buses) will be allocated to 100 cities throughout the country. These cities, selected from a pool of 169 cities with populations ranging from 3 to 40 lakh, will be chosen through a competitive process, he added. As per an official statement, the program will provide operational support for bus services for a decade. Thakur specified, “Cities with populations below 5 lakh will receive 50 e-buses, while those with populations between 5 to 20 lakh will be provided 100 e-buses.” Furthermore, cities with populations ranging from 20 to 40 lakh will be allotted 150 e-buses. He also mentioned that cities and states willing to allocate land for scrapping facilities for old buses will receive additional e-buses under this initiative.
