The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF) as a standalone centrally sponsored scheme under the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare. With a total outlay of Rs 2,481 crore (Rs 1,584 crore from the central government and Rs 897 crore from states) until 2025-26, NMNF aims to promote sustainable and chemical-free natural farming across the country.
In its statement, the government said, “Rooted in the traditional knowledge inherited from their forefathers, farmers will practise natural farming which involves local livestock integrated natural farming methods, diversified crop systems, etc.”
Natural Farming (NF) emphasizes traditional, eco-friendly methods involving local livestock, diverse cropping systems, and agro-ecological principles adapted to local conditions. It aims to reduce cultivation costs, dependence on external inputs, and exposure to chemical hazards while enhancing soil health, biodiversity, and resilience to climate risks. The mission supports the production of safe and nutritious food and ensures sustainable practices for future generations.
Over the next two years, NMNF will establish 15,000 clusters across Gram Panchayats, engaging 1 crore farmers and covering 7.5 lakh hectares. Priority will be given to areas already practicing NF and associated with organizations like SRLMs, PACS, and FPOs. To support farmers, 10,000 Bio-input Resource Centres (BRCs) will provide ready-to-use NF inputs, while 2,000 NF Model Demonstration Farms at Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), Agricultural Universities (AUs), and farmers’ fields will offer training on NF practices.
The mission will train 18.75 lakh farmers in preparing inputs like Jeevamrit and Beejamrit, with 30,000 Krishi Sakhis and CRPs facilitating awareness and support. Certification systems and common branding will ensure market access for NF produce, supported by market linkages through APMCs, local haats, and depots.
NMNF includes convergence with existing schemes and international support to boost livestock resources, develop model farms, and promote local markets. Student engagement will be facilitated through RAWE programs and dedicated NF courses. Implementation will be monitored via a real-time geo-tagged online portal.
