In a landmark move for India’s traditional food sector, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) launched a dedicated licensing and registration window for Ayurveda Aahara products on September 25, 2025. Hosted on the Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) portal, this initiative, developed in partnership with the Ministry of Ayush, seamlessly integrates India’s ancient Ayurvedic dietary wisdom with modern food safety standards, marking a significant step toward formalizing and promoting traditional Ayurvedic foods.
The new framework introduces a specialized “Kind of Business” (KoB) category for Ayurveda Aahara, enabling manufacturers across India to obtain licenses for producing and marketing these time-honored formulations. By aligning recipes from authoritative Ayurvedic texts with stringent safety and quality regulations, the initiative ensures authenticity while fostering innovation. Rooted in the Ayurvedic principle of personalized nutrition, which tailors diets to an individual’s unique constitution (prakriti), this regulatory pathway empowers food business operators to deliver products that support holistic health and complement prescribed Ayurvedic treatments.
To streamline compliance, FSSAI has published a comprehensive list of 91 pre-approved Ayurveda Aahara recipes in an order dated July 25, 2025. Available on the FSSAI website, this reference provides clear guidelines, ensuring manufacturers can produce authentic products while adhering to regulatory standards. This standardization is expected to drive growth in both the food and Ayurveda industries, offering consumers safe, high-quality products that honor India’s cultural heritage.
The collaboration between FSSAI and the Ministry of Ayush underscores the Government of India’s commitment to preserving traditional knowledge while prioritizing public health. By providing a dedicated licensing window, FSSAI is paving the way for a vibrant market for Ayurveda Aahara, benefiting manufacturers, practitioners, and consumers alike. This initiative not only promotes innovation but also ensures that the rich legacy of Ayurvedic nutrition is accessible to a global audience in a safe and regulated manner.
