Maitri Setu is a 1.9-kilometer bridge over the Feni River, connecting Sabroom in India’s Tripura with Ramgarh in Bangladesh. The bridge is strategically significant for Tripura and the entire northeastern region of India.
According to a senior government official, passenger movement through Maitri Setu, the bridge that connects Bangladesh and India in the south Tripura district, is scheduled to begin in September, this year.
The Maitri Setu, a 1.9-kilometer bridge over the Feni River, connects Sabroom in India’s Tripura with Ramgarh in Bangladesh. Virtually inaugurated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in March 2021, the bridge symbolizes strengthened bilateral relations.
Kiran Gitte, Secretary of Tripura’s Industries and Commerce Department stated, “The Maitri Setu has already been inaugurated. The land port is almost ready…The movement of passengers through the bridge will commence in September. It will take two or three months to introduce goods movement after passenger movement gets underway.”
The bridge is strategically significant for Tripura and the entire northeastern region of India. It facilitates the transport of goods via the Chittagong port in Bangladesh, which is only 80 kilometers from Sabroom, enhancing trade routes and economic development in the Northeast.
The Maitri Setu provides a vital link, fostering regional connectivity, trade, and diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh. Additionally, the reopening of the Kamalasagar border haat in Tripura’s Sepahijala district, which was closed due to the Covid pandemic, has been announced. Currently, the Srinagar border haat in south Tripura district remains operational. continuing to support cross-border trade and local economies.
