A collaboration between the United States Department of Energy (DOE) and India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) took place on 29th August 2023. It resulted in the introduction of the US-India Renewable Energy Technology Action Platform (RETAP).
In its initial stage, RETAP’s primary attention will be directed towards green and clean hydrogen, wind energy, extended-duration energy storage, as well as the investigation of potential in geothermal energy, ocean/tidal energy, and other nascent technologies.

Committing towards a more sustainable future, the United States Department of Energy (DOE) and India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) collaborated on August 29th to unveil the US-India Renewable Energy Technology Action Platform (RETAP), according to an official statement released on Wednesday.
As stated by the MNRE, the introduction of RETAP took place at the meeting on June 22, 2023, held in Washington D.C. This meeting involved US President Joe Biden and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where the leaders jointly declared an enhanced commitment to collaborate on novel and emerging technologies to expedite the shift towards cleaner energy sources.
Under the leadership of US DOE Deputy Secretary David Turk and MNRE Secretary Bhupinder Singh Bhalla, RETAP has been instituted as an outcome-driven and time-bound initiative, emphasizing technology as its core essence. Its principal aim is to drive forward the advancement and implementation of innovative renewable technologies.
In its initial phase, RETAP is set to concentrate on green and clean hydrogen, wind energy, and long-duration energy storage, and explore prospects in geothermal energy, ocean/tidal energy, and other technologies as they emerge in the future.
The collaboration blueprint for RETAP has been outlined by DOE and MNRE and is guided by five overarching themes: research & development; piloting & testing of innovative technologies; advanced training & skill development; policy and planning for advancing renewable energy technologies; and investment, incubation, and outreach programs.
During the meeting, both delegations shared insights into the latest technological developments in their respective countries, spanning hydrogen, energy storage, wind, geothermal energy, marine renewable energy, and clean energy deployment programs.
Going forward, DOE and MNRE intend to enhance RETAP collaboration, including potentially through the creation of a RETAP Steering Committee, joint working groups and collaboration among subject matter experts.
