During the April–October period of the current fiscal year, the inter-mandi trade on electronic-National Agriculture Market (eNAM), the digital wholesale agri-marketing platform, has increased by 260% annually to Rs 785 crore. There has also been a surge in interstate trade since the commencement of the year, which was not the case a year ago.
An official at the Ministry of Agriculture stated, although the inter-mandi trade volume still makes up a small part of e-NAM’s total turnover which amounted to Rs 37,000 crore during April-October period of 2023–2024, it suggests that farmers are gradually moving towards digital platforms, looking for better prices.
The Agriculture Ministry has urged all the central agencies including the Food Corporation of India, farmers’ cooperative NAFED, and others involved in the procurement and selling of grain, pulses and other agricultural produce to use the platform for exploring better prices.
Farmers from the states of Uttar Pradesh, Kashmir, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Telangana are selling commodities like potato, apples, saffron, turmeric, mustard, ragi, silk cocoon, chana, soyabean and jeera, to buyers in Kerala, Gujarat, Odisha, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, since the beginning of the current fiscal.
Currently, about 1,361 mandis across 27 states and Union Territories are connected with the e-NAM platform. Additionally, 17.64 million farmers, 3284 FPOs, 0.24 million traders and around 0.11 million commission agents are enrolled with e-NAM.
The e-NAM platform currently allows online trading in 209 agricultural, horticultural and other commodities notified by respective state governments, and it is the only digital platform with no user charges being levied on the transaction.
