New Delhi, November 3, 2026: Arunachal Pradesh’s kiwi fruit has reached international retail shelves, marking an important step in expanding agricultural exports from India’s northeastern region. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has facilitated the trial export of 1.5 metric tonnes (MT) of kiwi from Ziro in Arunachal Pradesh to Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The consignment has successfully arrived in Dubai and is being showcased at LuLu Hypermarket in Al Qusais. The shipment will help assess consumer demand and explore opportunities for future commercial exports.
Initiative to Promote Arunachal Pradesh Kiwi
The export has been undertaken under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) as part of the branding initiative “Kiwi: USP of Arunachal Pradesh.”
Implemented in collaboration with the Arunachal Pradesh government’s Departments of Trade & Commerce and Horticulture, the initiative aims to introduce locally grown kiwi to international consumers and establish stronger market connections for farmers.
What Makes Arunachal Pradesh Kiwi Special?
Arunachal Pradesh’s high-altitude climate and natural growing conditions support the cultivation of kiwi with distinctive quality and flavour.
The state produces several kiwi varieties, including Hayward, Monty, Allison and Bruno. Among these, the Hayward variety has shown encouraging demand in international markets.
The fruit also offers opportunities in premium domestic markets and value-added food products.
Dubai Consumers to Test Market Potential
With the consignment reaching LuLu Hypermarket, the initiative has moved beyond the initial shipment stage to retail-level market assessment.
Consumer tasting sessions and feedback will help exporters understand demand, quality expectations, packaging preferences and presentation requirements.
The findings could support future commercial shipments and help farmers and cooperatives meet international market standards.
New Export Opportunities for Northeast Farmers
The initiative is expected to create additional sales channels for local kiwi growers and potentially improve farmer returns through future exports.
The flag-off ceremony was attended by Arunachal Pradesh Agriculture Minister Gabriel D. Wangsu, MLA and Trade & Commerce Advisor Dr. Mohesh Chai, and other senior officials.
APEDA said the successful arrival and retail placement of the consignment provide an opportunity to assess the fruit’s overseas market potential and prepare local growers for international trade.
