Indian Energy Exchange recorded a 16.5% year-on-year increase in electricity traded volume to 12,796 million units in October 2026, while renewable energy certificate trading also witnessed strong growth.
New Delhi, November 3 — Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) recorded electricity traded volume of 12,796 million units (MU) in October 2026, registering a 16.5% year-on-year increase.
The growth in electricity trading came amid higher power demand and increased participation in the country’s short-term electricity market.
According to IEX, India’s total energy consumption during October stood at 149.7 billion units (BU), up 7.4% from the same month last year.
Higher electricity availability also helped keep prices competitive on the exchange.
The Market Clearing Price in the Day-Ahead Market (DAM) stood at ₹3.74 per unit, registering a decline of 2.4% year-on-year.
Meanwhile, the Real-Time Market (RTM) price averaged ₹3.53 per unit, down 7.7% from October 2025.
Lower electricity prices on the exchange can provide distribution companies and commercial and industrial consumers with opportunities to optimise their power procurement costs.
The Day-Ahead Market recorded a traded volume of 5,777 MU in October, up 0.6% from the year-ago period.
The Real-Time Market, which allows buyers and sellers to manage electricity requirements closer to actual delivery, recorded volume of 4,715 MU, representing strong growth of 29.6% year-on-year.
IEX’s Term-Ahead Market, which includes contingency, daily and weekly contracts, traded 1,332 MU, up 23.3% year-on-year.
Trading in green electricity also remained significant during the month.
The Green Market, comprising the Green Day-Ahead and Green Term-Ahead Market segments, recorded 972 MU of volume.
Meanwhile, trading in Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) witnessed sharp growth.
A total of 27.22 lakh RECs were traded during October, representing an increase of 47.2% compared with the same month last year.
The clearing prices for RECs stood at ₹315 and ₹320 per certificate during the two trading sessions held in October.
The growth in electricity and renewable certificate trading reflects increasing participation in India’s power exchanges as the country expands its electricity infrastructure and renewable-energy capacity.
