Food regulator FSSAI has initiated legal proceedings against Bengaluru-based British Lifesciences after inspections found misbranded and expired infant food products.

Food regulator Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on Thursday said it has initiated legal action against Bengaluru-based British Lifesciences Pvt. Ltd. after misbranded and expired infant food products were found during an inspection.
In a social media post, FSSAI said a substantial quantity of infant food products was also seized following the food safety inspections.
“Strict regulatory measures were taken against British Lifesciences Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru, following food safety inspections of infant food products. A substantial quantity of misbranded infant food was seized,” FSSAI said.
According to the regulator, a significant quantity of misbranded infant food articles was identified during the inspection and subsequently seized in accordance with provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
FSSAI said it initiated appropriate legal proceedings against the food business operator considering the serious nature of the violations and the potential risk that non-compliant infant food products could pose to infants and young children.
Apart from the misbranded products, the regulator also found a large quantity of expired infant food articles.
FSSAI said 3.7 tonnes of expired infant food articles were ordered to be destroyed in accordance with the court’s direction.
The expired stock was safely disposed of to ensure that the products could not be reused, diverted or reintroduced into the food chain, the regulator said.
