Assam to invest Rs 40,000 cr in semiconductor industry

The chief minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma declared that a semiconductor plant will be built in the state shortly with an initial investment of Rs 40,000 crore.

The Assam government said, “We are in good discussion and likely to get investment to the tune of Rs 40,000 crore in the semiconductor industry. We are competing with three states, including Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Orissa, and we are hopeful of making the breakthrough,” said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The state government has approved the Assam Electronics (Semiconductor, etc.) Policy 2023. Before that, the Assam cabinet approved productivity-linked incentives for the industry.

Earlier, advanced states like Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Orissa announced policies for semiconductors. Assam state also announced a policy where there will be a capital investment subsidy. With their new production-linked incentive policy, Assam will soon attract investments to manufacture semiconductors in the State.

“We have some positive vibes. Due to the clean and pure water of the Brahmaputra, many industrialists have expressed interest. For the semiconductor industry, clean water is required. Many are asking if we have a policy or not. Today, we have approved a policy, and we have positive vibes. I am very hopeful,” stated Chief Minister Himanta Sarma.
