At the BRICS Summit Plenary on July 7, Prime Minister Narendra Modi outlined a forward-looking vision to enhance the effectiveness of BRICS in today’s increasingly multipolar world. Speaking on the theme ‘Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs, and Artificial Intelligence,’ he presented four key proposals aimed at deepening cooperation and ensuring that BRICS remains a credible and impactful platform.

First, he stressed the importance of improving internal systems to enhance credibility, particularly when calling for reformed multilateralism. He noted that economic cooperation within BRICS has been steadily growing and highlighted the need for reforms within the group’s own institutions to lead by example. “First, emphasised on improving our own systems so that our credibility is boosted when we call for reformed multilateralism,” he stated in a post on X. He added that project approvals by the BRICS New Development Bank must be guided by “demand-driven decision-making, long-term financial sustainability and maintaining a healthy credit rating.

Second, the Prime Minister underlined the importance of collaborative initiatives, especially in serving the needs of the Global South. He highlighted the BRICS Agricultural Research Platform, based in India, as a valuable mechanism for sharing best practices in areas such as agri-biotech, precision farming, and climate adaptation. He also proposed establishing a BRICS Science and Research Repository to facilitate knowledge exchange and technological advancement that could benefit developing nations more broadly.

Third, PM Modi called for enhanced cooperation in securing and strengthening supply chains, particularly for critical minerals and emerging technologies. “Third, in addition to greater cooperation in critical minerals and technology, we must focus on securing and making their supply chains resilient. It must also be ensured that no country uses these resources solely for its own interests or as a weapon,” he said.

Fourth, he championed the cause of Responsible AI, stressing the need to balance innovation with safeguards. “India is actively using AI in many sectors. We believe that in AI governance, addressing concerns and encouraging innovation should both receive equal priority,” he noted. He reiterated India’s belief in the mantra of ‘AI for All’—promoting AI as a tool to uplift human values and capabilities.

Concluding his address, PM Modi noted that the Global South has high expectations from BRICS and urged the bloc to “Lead by Example.” He reaffirmed that “India is fully committed to working shoulder to shoulder with all partners to achieve our shared goals.
