Broken rice exports increased by 33%

In comparison to the same period last year, broken rice exports jumped 33.37% to 23.82 lakh tonnes during April to September of FY23.

Anupriya Patel, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, said that geopolitical factors have caused a rapid rise in demand for Indian broken rice in the global market. “India’s exports of broken rice have increased from 17.86 lakh mt in 2021-22 to 23.82 lakh mt in 2022-23 (April-September period), registering a growth of 33.37%,” she stated.

According to the Minister, exports climbed roughly by three times in the past four years, from 12.21 lakh tonnes in 2018-19 to 38.90 lakh tonnes in 2021-22.

Value of shipments has also increased from US$ 369.58 million in 2018–19 to US$ 1.13 billion in 2021-22. Broken rice is primarily used to make ethanol and as feed for livestock and poultry. Citing the Directorate of Economics and Statistics’ initial advance estimates for 2022-23, the Minister stated that the output of rice is anticipated to be less than the goal set for the current year.

With effect from September 9, 2022, the government has restricted the export of broken rice in order to assure appropriate availability on the domestic market.
