The central government has suggested creating a research and development strategy and implementation plan for the steel sector over the next decade. The purpose of this initiative is to encourage sustainable development and secure the sector’s enduring expansion, according to the Ministry of Steel.
Steel Secretary N. N Sinha chaired a session on May 11, 2023, to explore the development of the roadmap. The meeting brought together stakeholders from various fields, including the steel sector, academia, research laboratories, design and engineering companies, as well as other related ministries and departments.
In the meeting, the focus was on determining key research areas, such as the enhancement of iron ore and coal, carbon capture and utilization, decarbonization technologies, and the use of steel sector by-products, such as steel slag.
It addressed methods to enhance the industry’s engagement with research laboratories and academia to conduct joint research. Also, to make sure that intellectual property arising from research and development is accessible to the entire steel sector, and pinpoint sources of funding for research and development initiatives.
