India’s coffee exports hit a new high during 2021-22 touching a record US$ 1.04 billion over the previous year’s US$ 734.98 million. This is the first time that India’s coffee exports crossed over a billion dollars. There was a 42% rise in coffee shipments during 2021-22 owing to an increase in volumes and higher realizations. This is attributed to higher global prices & pent-up post-Covid demand.
The country exports over two-thirds of the over 3 lakh tonnes of coffee produced. At present, India’s instant coffee makers import cheaper coffee that is re-exported as value-added soluble coffees. The Coffee Board had pegged the crop size for the current coffee year 2021-22 ending September at 3.48 lakh tonnes in its post-monsoon estimates. This is inclusive of 2.49 lakh tonnes of Robusta and 99,000 tonnes of Arabicas.
