DGFT introduces swift approval for IT hardware imports

DGFT streamlines IT hardware imports with one-week approval. Firms must submit import-export data and origin details. Registration runs from November 1, 2023, to September 30, 2024, transitioning to an authorization system from October 1, 2024, to enhance domestic production.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has opened a registration window for companies interested in importing IT hardware, such as laptops and tablets. The goal is to approve applications within one week.

According to officials, companies are required to provide details regarding the value and volume of their IT hardware imports and exports, as well as information on domestic manufacturing over the past three years. Additionally, firms need to disclose the country of origin for their imports.

An official stated, “The format for registration has been shared, and companies can provide feedback if any adjustments are needed. It’s a straightforward form that can be completed in a few minutes.”

This development follows the government’s decision to temporarily eliminate licensing and quotas for IT hardware imports, at least until September of the following year. A meeting was held on September 25, attended by representatives from the IT hardware industry and officials from the Ministry of Electronics and IT (Meity), to discuss the registration process.

Following these discussions, it was decided that the registration would be valid from November 1, 2023, to September 30, 2024. Starting on October 1 of the next year, an authorization mechanism with quotas will be implemented, with the possibility of annual renewal.

This new mechanism is part of the government’s import management system, aimed at ensuring a smooth transition for the industry and preventing disruptions. The government’s objective is to fulfil up to 70% of the country’s IT hardware needs through local production in the next three years, reducing reliance on imports from untrusted sources.
