DRDO has licensed nine advanced defence technologies to Bharat Electronics, BEML, Bharat Forge, Tata Advanced Systems, and others, bolstering the Make in India initiative and enhancing India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has transferred a range of advanced defence technologies to ten Indian companies, reinforcing the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and strengthening domestic defence capabilities. This move aligns with DRDO’s vision of developing a strong defence industrial ecosystem involving both public and private sectors.
Bharat Electronics received two technologies. The CBRN Recce Vehicle (Tracked) Mk-II is designed for reconnaissance in contaminated zones, capable of detecting, monitoring, and marking areas exposed to chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear agents. It operates across diverse terrains like plains, deserts, and semi-deserts. The second technology, the Expandable Mobile Shelter, is a vehicle-mounted modular unit that expands to triple its size, serving as a versatile mobile facility for command posts, field hospitals, repair centres, and more.
Bharat Forge has been licensed the Mounted Gun System (MGS), a high-mobility artillery platform with a firing range of 45 km. It provides rapid deployment, shoot-and-scoot capability, and supports operations in both desert and high-altitude regions.
Metaltech Motor Bodies will manufacture the Anti-Terrorist Vehicle (Tracked Version), a compact, armoured vehicle equipped with thermal imaging and a remote-controlled weapon system. It is tailored for urban and border operations in high-threat environments.
A 70-ton trailer for transporting the Arjun Mk 1A Main Battle Tank has been licensed to BEML, Tata International Vehicle Applications, SDR Auto, and John Galt International. It features advanced hydraulics, steerable axles, and a modular design for secure and efficient transport. Tata Advanced Systems will produce the Vajra Riot Control Vehicle, a 7-ton vehicle with riot control features like tear gas launchers, intercoms, and space for 28 personnel.
BEML has also been licensed the Unit Maintenance and Unit Repair Vehicles for field support of the MBT Arjun. Lastly, Dass Hitachi and Goma Engineering received rights to the Multi-Purpose Decontamination System, a portable unit capable of eliminating chemical and biological agents using high-pressure steam, hot/cold water, and chemicals.
The technology licenses were handed over by Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary of Defence R&D and DRDO Chairman, at DRDO’s Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (VRDE) in Ahilyanagar, Maharashtra.
