India has established bilateral agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) related to maritime transportation and cooperation with 34 countries.

Sarbananda Sonowal, former Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterway, stated that India has engaged in bilateral agreements and MoUs with 34 nations concerning maritime transport and cooperation. Furthermore, India has also inked MoUs with 40 countries to acknowledge certificates of seafarers.
He highlighted that India has significantly engaged in numerous international maritime platforms to ensure fair and sustainable progress.
Sonowal made these remarks during a virtual session attended by Indian Ambassadors representing the East and West Zones. The objective of the meeting was to assess potential investment prospects within the national maritime industry.
“With a potential investment of more than 10-lakh crore, we can drive economic transformation that resonates within our borders and reverberates globally. We recognise the importance of robust international trade relations for its economic growth and are taking various initiatives to enhance global cooperation on the maritime front” Sonowal said.
Hinting at the upcoming Global Maritime India Summit (GMIS) 2023, the Minister urged ambassadors to utilize their influence in driving participation from their nations’ governments and businesses.
