The Ministry of Coal in India is spearheading the National Coal Logistic Plan to enhance energy security and support the self-reliance vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. At its core is the transformative First Mile Connectivity (FMC) concept, reshaping coal transportation practices.
FMC reduces the need for road-based coal transport within mining areas by utilizing conveyors or roads to reach railway sidings. This strategic shift minimizes truck traffic, effectively curbing air pollution, congestion, and road deterioration.
The drive towards sustainable growth and ecological preservation is embodied by the 67 First Mile Connectivity (FMC) Projects. With 59 led by Coal India Limited (CIL), 5 by Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), and 3 by NLC India Limited (NLCIL), these projects collectively aim to achieve a mechanized coal handling capacity of 1 billion metric tons in three distinct phases.
In alignment with the Prime Minister’s Gatishakti initiative, the Ministry of Coal has committed significant investment – Rs. 26,000 crore – to railway projects that establish crucial multi-modal connectivity.
A pivotal aspect of this endeavour is collaboration with the Ministry of Railways to augment coal evacuation and distribution capabilities. Notably, 13 railway lines are presently under construction, each at varying stages of development.
This concerted effort towards First Mile Connectivity not only overcomes transportation challenges but also strengthens national connectivity, fostering an environmentally conscious trajectory of progress. The FMC concept is emerging as a beacon of hope, ushering in a new era of mindful and well-connected societies.
