The United Nation’s tourism organization reported that the international visitor arrivals doubled in 2022, and would resemble pre-pandemic levels in 2023. The upsurge is credited to the travel relaxations specifically in China.
The World Tourism Organization, based in Madrid called it “stronger than expected results” as there were 917 million international tourist arrivals in 2022, up from 455 million in 2021.
The organization also projected that the number of international arrivals could jump by 80% to 95% in 2023, even more from 63% of the levels recorded in pre-Covid era.
“Looking ahead, international tourism is set to consolidate its recovery in 2023, backed by pent-up demand, particularly from Asia and the Pacific as destinations and market open up”, the report stated.
Europe recorded to be the most popular travel destination as it recorded 585 million tourist arrivals in 2022, over 80% of pre-pandemic levels.
Due to Covid related travel restrictions, the Pacific area achieved 23% of pre-pandemic tourist visits, whereas Africa and the Americas reached roughly 65%.
Zurab Pololikashvili, UN’s secretary general stated, “A new year brings more reason for optimism for global tourism”.
Although a surge in international tourism is recorded, the UN body warned that high inflation and interest rates, fears of a global recession and the “uncertainty derived from the Russian aggression against Ukraine” could hamper the recovery of the sector in 2023.
