A cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan decided to establish the innovative facility on a public-private partnership model at a cost of 237 crore, according to a CMO statement. In Kerala, Graphene is referred to as a wonder material due to its extraordinary electrical and electronic properties.
The Kerala Digital University will be the implementing agency, and KINFRA has been designated as a special-purpose vehicle for infrastructure development, according to the announcement.
As per the statement, the digital university has been granted permission to prepare a preliminary proposal to seek loans from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) for the project and to seek private partners through a global expression of interest.
According to experts, graphene is the world’s thinnest and strongest material, with good chemical stability, high electrical conductivity, and a large surface area while remaining transparent and lightweight.
A managing committee would be formed for the upcoming project, consisting of representatives from the Industries and IT Departments, as well as the Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (KINFRA).
The India Innovation Centre for Graphene, a research and development centre established as part of the proposed ecosystem for graphene-based technology development, is still in its early stages, according to the report.
