To enhance the design capabilities of the domestic defence sector and attain self-reliance, the MoD has approved a fresh list of 928 components and subsystems.
In another move to achieve self-reliance in defence products, the defence ministry has approved a new list of 928 components and subsystems, to be procured from the domestic industry. The listed components will be banned in a phased manner in the next five to six years and will not be imported in future.
The new “positive indigenisation list” for the Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) is in continuation of the previous three lists, announced in December 2021, March 2022 and August 2022 respectively. This fourth Positive Indigenisation List (PIL) of 928 strategically-important sub-systems, spares, and components, is expected to circumvent imports worth Rs 715 crore.
According to the Ministry of Defence, there are 2,500 defence items for which there is no more dependence on foreign manufacturers or suppliers. From the other 1238 defence items, 310 have already been indigenised. For the remaining items, self-reliance is expected to be gained within the given time period.
The defence ministry said, “The DPSUs will undertake indigenisation of these items through different routes under the ‘Make’ category and in-house development through the capabilities of MSMEs and private Indian industry, thereby providing impetus to the growth in the economy, enhanced investment in defence, and reduction in import dependence of DPSUs.”
The MoD further added that this will enhance the design capabilities of the domestic defence industry.
