National fish production reached all-time high

Fish production in India, for the year 2022-23 is estimated at around 174 lakh tons, showing an increase of 81%, over the national fish output recorded in 2013-14.

Fish production in India has been increasing continuously. According to the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, since 1950 and till the end of FY2021-22, the national fish production has increased 22-fold. 

The annual fish production of India In the past 9 years has increased from 95.79 lakh tons (at the end of 2013-14) to an all-time record high of 162.48 lakh tons (at the end of 2021-22), an increase of 66.69 lakh tons.

The Ministry informed that national fish production for the year 2022-23 is estimated at around 174 lakh tons. This is an increase of 81%, as compared to the national fish output in 2013-14.

The fisheries sector in India has logged in a sustained annual average growth rate of 8.61% for the 8-year period from 2014-15 to 2021-22 (at constant prices). The sector contributes about 1.069% to the National Gross value added (GVA) and 6.86% in Agriculture GVA.

Mr. Parshottam Rupala, Union minister for the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying informed that during the past 9 years, the Government of India has enhanced investments in the fisheries and aquaculture sector. Since 2015, the cumulative investments worth Rs 38,572 crore, have been approved or announced by the central government.

He further informed that India is the 3rd largest fish-producing country in the world. Its share in the global fish production is around 8%.

India ranks 2nd in global aquaculture production. It is also one of the leading shrimp-producing and exporting nations in the world.
