Government is planning to reduce carbon intensity of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) and achieve net zero emissions by 2070. As a part of its efforts to achieve this objective, the Union Cabinet has approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission with an investment outlay of Rs 19,744 crore. This aims to make India a global hub for the production, utilisation, and export of Green Hydrogen and its derivatives.
National Green Hydrogen Mission seeks to develop an annual green hydrogen production capacity of at least 5 million tonnes (MT) by 2030, along with the related renewable energy capacity addition of 125 gigawatt (GW). It is expected that the mission would enable ‘cumulative reduction’ in imports of the fossil fuel of about Rs 1 trillion. It is also expected to cut around 50 MT of annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. The Ministry of New and Renewable energy will work out the details of the scheme, including guidelines for its implementation.
According to a statement by the Ministry, “The initial outlay for the mission will be Rs 19,744 crore, including an outlay of Rs 17,490 crore for Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition Programme (SIGHT), Rs 1,466 crore for pilot projects, Rs 400 crore for R&D, and Rs 388 crore towards other mission components”.
Green hydrogen is the hydrogen produced by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable electricity. It is being recognised as an enabler of the global transition to sustainable energy and ‘net zero emission’ economies.
