India has exported its first 12 MT of fortified rice kernel from Chhattisgarh to Costa Rica, strengthening agricultural exports and showcasing innovation in food fortification. The initiative supports farmers, expands global market access, and reinforces India’s commitment to delivering nutrition-enhanced food products internationally.
India has sent its first shipment of fortified rice kernel (12 MT) from Chhattisgarh to Costa Rica, facilitated by APEDA under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. This significant development aligns with the Government of India’s flagship mission, “Kuposhan Mukt Bharat” (Malnutrition-Free India), launched under the Poshan Abhiyan. As part of this initiative, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) distributes fortified rice across the country to improve nutritional outcomes. The export milestone underscores India’s efforts to extend the benefits of its domestic nutrition strategies to global platforms.
Chhattisgarh, known for its rich agricultural base, has been consistently promoting rice and fortified rice products for export. This achievement will not only boost the state’s international trade profile but also strengthen the economic opportunities for local farmers, millers, and exporters. The consignment to Costa Rica demonstrates Chhattisgarh’s growing prominence in the global fortified food supply chain.
APEDA Chairman, Mr Abhishek Dev commended the accomplishment, highlighting that the export strengthens India’s agricultural export basket while reinforcing its commitment to combating malnutrition through scientifically supported solutions. He assured ongoing support to exporters in exploring new markets for value-added and nutrition-focused food products.
Mr Mukesh Jain, President of the Rice Exporters Association of Chhattisgarh (TREA-CG), thanked APEDA for its support in enabling the shipment and noted that plans are underway to export FRK to additional markets soon. He also requested APEDA’s continued assistance in further boosting agricultural exports from the state.
Fortified Rice Kernel is created by blending rice flour with essential micronutrients such as iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12, then shaping it to mimic rice grains before mixing with regular rice to enhance nutritional value. This successful export reflects India’s technological capacity in food fortification and strengthens its role in advancing global nutrition and food security.
