According to the agriculture ministry’s data, the overall coverage of summer crops till April 28 was 65.29 lakh hectares, slightly lower than the 66.02 lakh hectares reported last year. The data revealed that the area under sowing for rice and oilseeds has decreased. On the other hand, the coverage area for pulses and coarse cereals has increased.
As of April 28, 2023, the area coverage for rice was 27.45 lakh hectares, down from 29.14 lakh hectares in the same period last year, according to the ministry.

The acreage of pulses rose from 16.23 lakh hectares to 17.57 lakh hectares, while coarse cereals increased from 10.19 lakh hectares to 10.86 lakh hectares. However, in the non-foodgrains category, the sowing area for oilseeds has declined from 10.46 lakh hectares to 9.40 lakh hectares YoY.
The zaid/summer crop season is short, running from March to June, and falls between the rabi (winter-sown) and kharif (summer-sown) seasons. These crops are cultivated in areas with reliable irrigation facilities.
