As per the new regulations implemented by the National Medical Commission (NMC), doctors will now have to obtain a Unique Identification Number (UID) in order to practice medicine in the country.
UID will be centrally generated by the ethics board of the NMC. This UID will serve as a means to register the practitioner in the National Medical Registry (NMR) and make them eligible to practice medicine in India.
For all the registered medical practitioners in India, there would be a common medical register. Under the NMC, the same regulations would be implemented by the Ethics and Medical Registration Board (EMRB). All the important relevant information regarding medical practitioners, and all the entries of these practitioners from all the states which will be maintained by the State Medical Councils will fall under the common medical register.
The licence, provided to practitioners to practice medicine, will be valid for five years and can also be renewed after applying to the State Medical Council. To renew the licence, practitioners can apply for three months before the expiry of the current licence which they have.
