During the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Washington DC, the United States administration provided executive approvals for the production of F414 jet engines in India. This historic decision signifies a significant milestone, as it represents the first instance of the US sharing a crucial component of its defense capabilities with a non-ally country.
The information on the notification process to the US Congress regarding the upcoming Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between General Electric (GE) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has been confirmed.
The partnership between the US and India carries tremendous importance, as it entails the joint manufacturing of jet engines, even in the absence of a formal treaty between the two countries. Additionally, the United States is sharing a significant amount of sensitive jet engine technology, thereby facilitating a higher ratio of technology transfer.
India will gain unrestricted access to the engine technology without any undisclosed elements. The manufacturing process in India will initiate with a technology transfer exceeding 50%, with subsequent increments anticipated throughout the production cycle.
Furthermore, the agreement will incorporate a flexible licensing arrangement, granting India ownership of engine designs and sensitive technologies. This transfer of technology is a momentous achievement, as the United States has never authorized such a comprehensive level of technology transfer in previous instances. This development marks a significant milestone in the collaboration between the two nations.
