Vedanta Aluminium has declared its adoption of sustainable practices by entering into long-term agreements for the supply of renewable energy, securing a total capacity of 1335 MW to fuel its operations. The announcement was made to mark Akshay Urja Diwas. These agreements encompass a blend of solar and wind energy, providing the energy needs of Vedanta Aluminium in Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
This strategic move aligns with the company’s commitment to lowering greenhouse gas emissions, resulting in a significant reduction of approximately 3.2 million tonnes of CO2 per year. This reduction stands as a noteworthy achievement in the company’s ongoing efforts towards decarbonisation.
In 2004, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy introduced the Akshay Urja Diwas, a special campaign. This campaign’s objective is to encourage the adoption of renewable energy sources by focusing on technological innovation and decentralized power generation. The initiative’s core emphasis is on embracing various forms of renewable energy, such as solar, wind, and biofuels.
The company is exploring the utilization of biofuels to run its operations. To meet its energy needs, the company has initiated the use of biomass pellets and briquettes derived from agricultural waste. This incorporation of biofuels has been integrated into various facets of the company’s operations, including facilities like BALCO in Chhattisgarh, Jharsuguda in Odisha, which also houses one of the world’s largest aluminium smelters and Lanjigarh in Odisha. Notably, Vedanta Aluminium’s most extensive and top-tier alumina refinery is located in Lanjigarh.
