Waves 2025: PM Modi backs creative industries for GDP growth

The inaugural Waves Summit in Mumbai brought together Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mukesh Ambani, and leading figures from the Indian entertainment industry to highlight the nation’s growing global influence in media and entertainment.

On Thursday, top stars, directors, and industrialists, including Mukesh Ambani and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, came together to inaugurate the inaugural Waves Summit in Mumbai. The four-day event, organized by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), aims to bring together global content creators from across media and entertainment sectors.

In his inaugural speech, Modi highlighted the significant role India’s creative industries would play in driving the country’s future economic growth. He emphasized that it was the right time to “create in India, create for the world” as global audiences increasingly seek new storytelling approaches. “The Orange Economy—rooted in content, creativity, and culture—will be a strong pillar of India’s GDP in the coming years,” Modi said, pointing to India’s rising global influence in film, music, gaming, and animation. He noted the rapid growth of OTT platforms in India, which have expanded tenfold recently, stating, “Screens are becoming micro, but messages are becoming macro.

Modi invited global investors and creators to make India their “content playground” and encouraged them to invest in India’s stories, talent, and traditions. He also stressed that India’s potential lies not only in its infrastructure but in its people, urging investors to focus on “people” and inviting the Indian youth to share their untold stories globally.

Mukesh Ambani, delivering his keynote, praised the growing global stature of India’s media and entertainment sector. He noted that the acronym “Waves” reflected the key themes of culture, innovation, collaboration, and the creative economy. Ambani emphasized India’s unmatched storytelling tradition, from the Ramayana to the Mahabharata, and its potential to unite the world. He also highlighted the fusion of storytelling and technology, including AI and immersive tools, which empower Indian creators to lead in the global entertainment industry.
