State Bank of India (SBI) has revised service charge rules for customers holding Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) accounts. The changes will come into effect from October 1, 2026, and will alter the way the bank calculates the four free withdrawals available to these customers every month.
Under the revised rules, BSBD account holders will continue to receive four free withdrawals in a month. However, digital transactions will now also be considered while calculating this monthly limit. Earlier, such transactions were not included in the four-withdrawal ceiling.
The free transaction limit will cover withdrawals made through SBI ATMs, ATMs of other banks, branch channels and eligible digital transactions. Once a customer crosses the four free withdrawals in a month, SBI will levy a charge of ₹15 plus applicable GST for every additional cash withdrawal.
The change is important for BSBD customers because these accounts are primarily designed to provide basic banking facilities without requiring customers to maintain a minimum balance.
BSBD account holders can withdraw cash from SBI branches using withdrawal forms and can also use ATMs. The bank provides a basic RuPay ATM-cum-debit card with the account. However, cheque book facilities are not available with this type of account.
Several services will remain free even after the revised rules take effect. SBI will not charge customers for issuance or annual maintenance of the basic RuPay ATM-cum-debit card. Electronic credits received through channels such as NEFT and RTGS will also remain free.
Deposits or collection of cheques issued by central and state governments will continue without charges. SBI also does not levy a fee for activating an inoperative BSBD account, although charges may apply when the account is closed.
There are specific eligibility rules for BSBD accounts as well. A customer holding a BSBD account cannot simultaneously maintain another savings bank account with SBI. If an existing SBI savings account holder opens a BSBD account, the other savings account must be closed within 30 days.
