The ₹10,998-crore Varuna Elevated Corridor will connect NH-31 with the Varanasi Ring Road, adding a predominantly elevated six/four-lane route to strengthen connectivity across the city’s highway, rail, airport and port network.
Varanasi is set for a major expansion of its urban transport network with the Union Cabinet approving the ₹10,998-crore Varuna Elevated Corridor, spanning 43.218 km along the Varuna River corridor.
Developed by the National Highways Authority of India under the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, the project will connect NH-31 with the Varanasi Ring Road. The predominantly elevated six/four-lane corridor will include flyovers, loops, ramps and service roads, along with a cable-stayed bridge and an extradosed foot over bridge-cum-major bridge.
The project forms part of the Varanasi Decongestion Plan and is designed to improve movement between highways, railway stations, the airport and key urban areas. It will provide connectivity towards Varanasi Airport, Varanasi Cantonment, Varanasi City Railway Station, Kashi Railway Station and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction, while strengthening access to Ramnagar Port.
Designed for speeds of 80–100 kmph, the corridor is expected to reduce travel time between NH-31 and Kashi Railway Station from around 40 minutes to nearly 20 minutes. Travel between Varanasi Junction and Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport is projected to decline from nearly an hour to around 20 minutes.
The additional road capacity is intended to ease pressure at congestion points including Varanasi Junction, Phulwaria and Chaukaghat, where local, commercial and through traffic converge.
Aligned with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, the corridor will also improve connectivity to the Chandauli Socio-Economic Zone, Chandauli Social Node and six major logistics nodes. Better integration of highway, rail and freight infrastructure is expected to facilitate movement of agricultural produce, industrial goods, construction materials and minerals across Varanasi, Chandauli and adjoining areas.
Improved road access is also expected to support movement towards major religious and tourism destinations, including the ghats and Kashi Vishwanath Temple, while strengthening connectivity to educational institutions such as Sampurnanand Sanskrit University.
The total project cost includes ₹4,565.33 crore for civil construction and ₹934.91 crore for land acquisition. Its predominantly elevated design is intended to add transport capacity through a densely built-up and historically significant urban area without relying solely on extensive road widening.
With Varanasi serving simultaneously as a pilgrimage centre, tourism destination, education hub and regional logistics node, the Varuna Elevated Corridor is designed to connect different flows of passengers and freight while strengthening integration with the city’s wider transport infrastructure.
