Aditya Birla Capital has entered the gold loan business as it looks to expand its secured lending portfolio and build a larger presence in India’s fast-growing retail credit market.
The company’s non-banking financial company business has started offering gold loans as part of its existing retail and MSME lending franchise, according to a regulatory filing.
The announcement was positively received by investors, with shares of Aditya Birla Capital rising around 3 per cent during Thursday’s trading session.
200-300 branches planned by March 2027
Aditya Birla Capital plans to open between 200 and 300 dedicated gold loan branches by March 2027.
The branches will be established across markets where the company sees strong growth potential for secured lending against gold.
Over a three-year period, the company aims to scale the network to around 1,000 gold loan branches across India.
The planned expansion would give the company a sizeable physical footprint in a lending segment that has seen strong demand from retail and small-business customers.
Gold loans complement existing lending business
The company said gold loans complement its existing retail and MSME lending operations by providing customers with a collateral-backed borrowing option.
Gold loans are typically secured against jewellery or other eligible gold assets, allowing borrowers to raise short-term credit without selling the underlying asset.
For lenders, the collateralised nature of the product can help reduce credit risk compared with certain unsecured loan categories.
The move therefore broadens Aditya Birla Capital’s secured credit offerings while creating another channel for customer acquisition.
Strong structural growth in gold loans
Rakesh Singh, Executive Director and CEO-NBFC at Aditya Birla Capital, said gold loans are witnessing strong structural growth in India.
He described the company’s entry into the business as a natural extension of its broader secured lending strategy.
The gold loan market has traditionally been important in India because households hold significant quantities of physical gold and often use it as collateral for relatively quick access to funds.
Demand comes from a wide range of customers, including salaried individuals, self-employed borrowers and small businesses.
Focus on trust and secure handling
Customer confidence is expected to be an important part of Aditya Birla Capital’s strategy.
Singh said borrowers look for transparency, secure handling of their gold and confidence that valuable assets will be protected throughout the loan process.
The company plans to build the business around governance, prudent risk management, operational excellence and a customer-first approach.
Secure storage and transparent valuation processes are particularly important in the gold loan segment because the pledged asset often has both significant financial and emotional value for customers.
Existing network to support expansion
Aditya Birla Capital intends to use its existing distribution infrastructure as it expands the gold loan business across the country.
The company also plans to leverage digital capabilities to support customer acquisition, loan processing and servicing.
Combining physical branches with digital systems could allow it to scale more efficiently while maintaining local access for customers who prefer in-person gold appraisal and loan disbursal.
Shares gain after announcement
Aditya Birla Capital shares rose following the announcement of the new business.
At around 11:15 AM, the stock was trading 3.07 per cent higher at ₹408.15.
Investor interest likely reflected expectations that the gold loan segment could provide an additional growth avenue for the company’s lending operations.
The planned expansion also signals a more aggressive push into secured retail finance.
Pan-India gold loan franchise planned
With its proposed branch rollout, Aditya Birla Capital is looking to build a pan-India gold loan franchise over the next few years.
The business will add another product to the company’s portfolio while allowing it to serve customers seeking short-term secured credit.
If the planned rollout proceeds as outlined, the company could emerge as a more significant participant in India’s organised gold loan market, competing on reach, trust, service quality and digital integration.
