New Delhi, August 29, 2026: The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) has completed 12 years, reaching 59.09 crore accounts with total deposits of ₹3,16,514 crore as of August 19, 2026.
Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 28, 2014, the financial inclusion programme was introduced with the objective of providing unbanked adults across India with access to basic banking services.
Under the scheme, eligible individuals can open a basic bank account without a minimum balance requirement or maintenance charges, helping bring a large section of the population into the formal banking system.
Women account holders continue to represent a significant share of the programme. Of the total PMJDY accounts, 32.92 crore are held by women, accounting for 55.7 per cent of all accounts.
The scheme has also maintained a strong presence outside major urban centres. Rural and semi-urban areas account for 45.95 crore accounts, representing approximately 77.8 per cent of the total PMJDY accounts.
According to data from the Ministry of Finance, deposits in Jan Dhan accounts have increased around 12.8 times over the past 12 years. During the same period, the number of accounts has grown approximately 2.3 times.
The average deposit per account stood at ₹5,356 as of August 19, 2026, marking an increase of around 3.4 times compared with the earlier years of the scheme.
PMJDY has also supported the wider adoption of digital and formal banking services. A total of 41.29 crore RuPay debit cards have been issued to account holders under the programme.
The RuPay cards provide eligible account holders with accident insurance cover of up to ₹2 lakh. Eligible beneficiaries can also access an overdraft facility of up to ₹10,000.
Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said the impact of the programme should not be measured only through the number of accounts opened or deposits mobilised.
He highlighted the role of PMJDY in delivering financial services to people at the last mile and enabling direct access to banking and government benefits without relying on intermediaries.
The Jan-Dhan–Aadhaar–Mobile, or JAM, framework has played an important role in expanding the use of PMJDY accounts. With Jan Dhan accounts forming a key part of the system, the framework has enabled the direct transfer of welfare benefits into beneficiaries’ bank accounts.
The government has said that the mechanism has helped reduce intermediaries and delays in the delivery of financial assistance.
PMJDY accounts have also helped beneficiaries access insurance and pension-related services under the Jan Suraksha schemes, including the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana.
The Ministry of Finance said the expansion of the programme has been supported by mission-mode implementation, regulatory reforms, public-private partnerships and the growth of India’s digital infrastructure.
Technologies such as Aadhaar-enabled biometric verification have also helped expand access to banking services, particularly in rural and previously underserved areas.
As PM Jan Dhan Yojana enters its 13th year, the focus is expected to remain on expanding access to savings, credit, insurance and pension services while further strengthening financial inclusion across the country.
