Dubai Office Targets Indian Diaspora
Chennai, September 6, 2026: Indian Bank has received board approval to open a representative office in Dubai as part of its strategy to expand overseas operations and tap business opportunities linked to the large Indian diaspora in West Asia.
Indian Bank Managing Director and CEO Binod Kumar said the bank is now seeking the necessary regulatory approvals for the Dubai representative office. The move is expected to strengthen the lender’s engagement with non-resident Indians and businesses operating in the region.
The bank currently operates a full-service international branch in Singapore and branches in Colombo and Jaffna in Sri Lanka. It also has an IFSC Banking Unit at GIFT City in Gandhinagar, which has been generating business through activities including participation in syndicated loans.
Kumar said the bank is also exploring potential expansion into Malaysia and Indonesia.
On the domestic front, Indian Bank plans to add around 100 branches during the current year, with particular emphasis on strengthening its presence in central and western India. The bank also expects to increase its workforce by around 2,500 employees, including specialist officers, to support business expansion and replace retiring staff.
Indian Bank had 6,003 domestic branches as of June 30, 2026. The public-sector lender expanded significantly in eastern India and Uttar Pradesh following the amalgamation of Allahabad Bank in 2020.
The bank had also inaugurated 15 branches across the country on August 15 as part of its foundation-day activities.
The Dubai expansion reflects Indian Bank’s broader strategy of increasing its international presence while strengthening its domestic branch network and workforce.
