Career Outcomes Drive Study Abroad Choices
Mumbai, September 9
Indian students are increasingly evaluating overseas education based on employment opportunities, return on investment and long-term career outcomes, according to upGrad’s Transnational Education Report 2026.
The report found that around 49% of Indian aspirants identified better job opportunities as their primary reason for studying abroad, ahead of factors such as education quality, permanent residency and lifestyle aspirations.
The findings are based on insights from 53,800 counselled aspirants between January 2025 and June 2026. Fresh graduates and students early in their professional careers formed a significant portion of the respondent base, with 65.8% identified as freshers. Nearly 60% of aspirants came from tier II and III cities.
While the US, UK, Canada and Australia continue to remain important destinations, interest in Europe is increasing amid tighter immigration policies and rising costs in traditional markets.
Countries including Germany, Finland, Spain and France are attracting students because of their affordability, industry alignment and employment-linked pathways, the report said.
Cost is also becoming a major consideration. Seven out of 10 aspirants surveyed said they planned to pursue overseas education with a total budget of less than ₹30 lakh.
The report indicates a broader shift toward value-driven international education, with students increasingly assessing destinations based on future employability, career prospects and financial returns rather than institutional reputation alone.
