Lights-Out Factory Advances Industrial Automation

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has launched an Industrial Autonomy & Engineering Lab at its Sahyadri Park campus in Pune, which the IT major described as India’s first lights-out factory lab focused on advancing AI-led manufacturing.
A lights-out factory is a manufacturing facility where autonomous systems can operate production lines with minimal human intervention.
The new TCS facility houses a fully robotic battery pack assembly line. The live, multi-stage setup is designed to help manufacturers prototype, validate and scale AI-first production systems while reducing deployment risks.
According to TCS, the lab demonstrates how self-optimising factories can combine digital twins, robotics, industrial AI, factory control systems and real-time operational intelligence to automate manufacturing workflows.
The company said the facility supports its broader vision of helping enterprises move from digitally enabled operations toward increasingly autonomous production systems.
The Pune lab will support several industrial applications, including predictive maintenance, automated quality inspection, real-time process optimisation, human-machine collaboration and autonomous factory operations.
TCS said the facility will provide customers with a practical environment to test and develop technologies needed to move toward more autonomous manufacturing operations.
