Mumbai: HDFC Bank has moved ahead with its leadership succession process, submitting two candidates to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for the position of Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.
India’s largest private-sector lender said the names have been submitted to the central bank in order of preference. However, HDFC Bank has not publicly disclosed the identities of the two candidates.
The development marks a significant step in the bank’s succession planning as it prepares for a change at the top. The final appointment will be subject to approval from the RBI, which plays a key role in approving senior leadership appointments at Indian banks.
The candidate selected following regulatory approval is proposed to be appointed MD & CEO for a three-year term.
HDFC Bank is currently led by Sashidhar Jagdishan, who took charge as Managing Director and CEO in October 2020, succeeding longtime chief Aditya Puri. Jagdishan has overseen one of the most important periods in the lender’s history, including the merger of housing finance major HDFC Ltd with HDFC Bank in 2023.
The merger significantly expanded the bank’s balance sheet and created a much larger financial-services institution, while also bringing challenges related to deposits, credit growth and balance-sheet management.
The selection of HDFC Bank’s next chief will therefore be closely watched by investors and the wider banking industry. The incoming leadership will be responsible for steering the lender’s next phase of growth while managing its large loan and deposit franchise, digital banking operations and post-merger strategy.
The RBI’s decision will be the key next step in the succession process. Once regulatory approval is received, HDFC Bank is expected to complete the necessary corporate formalities for the appointment.
Given HDFC Bank’s size and its importance to India’s financial system, the leadership transition is likely to remain closely tracked by shareholders, analysts and banking-sector participants.
