India’s passenger vehicle sales rose 36.5% year-on-year in August 2026 to 4.39 lakh units, while three-wheelers and two-wheelers also recorded their highest-ever August sales, according to SIAM.
India’s automobile industry recorded strong domestic sales in August 2026, with passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and two-wheelers posting their highest-ever August volumes, according to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).
Passenger vehicle sales reached 4,39,309 units during the month, registering year-on-year growth of 36.5%. Three-wheeler sales increased 22.8% to 93,764 units, while two-wheeler sales rose 10.5% to 20,34,698 units compared with August 2025.
Total production of passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, two-wheelers and quadricycles stood at 31,57,822 units during August. SIAM noted that production data for BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar Land Rover, Tata Motors and Volvo Auto were unavailable. Passenger vehicle domestic sales data included Tata Motors, while BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar Land Rover and Volvo Auto were excluded. Excluding Tata Motors, total passenger vehicle sales stood at 3,74,056 units.
SIAM attributed part of the sharp year-on-year growth to a lower base in the previous year. The industry body said the broader demand environment remained healthy, supported by consumer confidence, rural markets, financing conditions and growing adoption of alternative powertrains. Festive demand is also expected to support automobile sales during the second quarter.
The August performance follows a strong July, when passenger vehicle sales had risen 34.3% year-on-year to 4,57,810 units. Three-wheeler sales grew 33.4% to 92,560 units, while two-wheeler sales increased 22.6% to 19,23,483 units during July.
The latest figures indicate continued domestic momentum across major vehicle categories as the automobile industry moves further into the festive sales period.
