India has explored deeper energy cooperation with the United States and Canada, focusing on clean energy, nuclear expansion, energy efficiency and emerging technologies during bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the G20 Energy Abundance Working Group in Houston.
Union Power Minister Manohar Lal held separate bilateral meetings with US and Canadian delegations during the G20 Energy Abundance Working Group meetings in Houston, discussing opportunities to strengthen long-term energy partnerships.
During his meeting with US Energy Secretary Chris Wright, both sides reviewed India’s power infrastructure plans for artificial intelligence, high-performance computing and data centres, alongside India’s nuclear expansion roadmap. They reaffirmed cooperation under the US-India Energy Security Partnership, with discussions centred on clean energy, resilient infrastructure and emerging technologies.
In talks with Canada’s Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Corey Hogan, India explored cooperation in energy efficiency, low-emission technologies and offshore exploration under the government’s Samundra Manthan scheme. Manohar Lal also encouraged Canadian companies to participate in India’s expanding exploration and production sector and deepen collaboration in emerging energy technologies.
Addressing the G20 event, the minister highlighted India’s progress across the energy sector, noting that the country has reached 552 GW of installed power capacity, with non-fossil sources contributing more than 50% of total capacity. He also pointed to advances in solar power, energy storage, nuclear energy and clean cooking access.
The discussions reflect India’s broader strategy of strengthening international partnerships while expanding domestic clean-energy capacity, modernising power infrastructure and supporting future industries such as AI-driven data centres.
