IndiGo retained its lead in India’s domestic aviation market with a 65% share in August 2026, carrying 78.87 lakh passengers, while overall domestic passenger traffic declined 6.34% year-on-year.
India’s domestic airlines carried around 1.21 crore passengers in August 2026, down 6.34% from the same month last year, according to Directorate General of Civil Aviation data.
IndiGo remained the country’s largest domestic airline, carrying 78.87 lakh passengers and accounting for 65% of the market during the month. Its market share, however, declined from 67.4% in July.
The Air India Group ranked second with a 26.7% market share after carrying 32.32 lakh passengers. Its share increased from 24% in July, a gain of 2.7 percentage points.
Akasa Air retained third position with a 5.5% share and carried 6.68 lakh passengers. SpiceJet accounted for 1.2% of the domestic market, carrying 1.40 lakh passengers during August.
Airline performance data also showed a significant gap in punctuality. IndiGo recorded the highest on-time performance among the major carriers at about 91%, closely followed by Akasa Air at 90.5%. The Air India Group recorded 83.9%, while Alliance Air stood at 71.8%. SpiceJet’s on-time performance was 17.9%.
The August figures came amid weaker domestic passenger traffic compared with a year earlier. During January-August 2026, Indian domestic airlines carried 110.53 million passengers, compared with 110.73 million in the corresponding period of 2025, representing a marginal 0.18% decline.
