Power Shortages Return in North India as Summer Electricity Demand Surges

Key Highlights

  • Power shortages have started reappearing in North India
  • Uttar Pradesh reported unmet peak power demand for the first time since 2018
  • India’s peak electricity demand crossed record levels this summer
  • Heatwave conditions are sharply increasing power consumption
  • Delhi, UP, Punjab, and Uttarakhand are among affected regions
  • Evening hours remain the most challenging for power supply management
  • Experts warn that demand may rise further in the coming weeks
  • Authorities are monitoring the grid closely to avoid major blackouts

Northern India is once again witnessing power shortages and electricity disruptions as rising summer temperatures push electricity demand to new highs across several states. With heatwave conditions intensifying earlier than expected, states like Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand are already facing pressure on their power infrastructure.

According to recent data and industry analysis, electricity demand in India has climbed sharply due to the increased use of air conditioners, coolers, fans, and other cooling appliances. The situation has raised concerns over whether the country’s power grid can sustain record demand levels throughout the peak summer season.

Uttar Pradesh Reports Fresh Power Shortfall

Uttar Pradesh, one of India’s largest power-consuming states, reported unmet peak electricity demand in April the first such shortfall since 2018. Reports indicate that the unmet demand was nearly 1.5% of the state’s total peak requirement, highlighting growing stress on the power supply system.

The state has also seen electricity demand cross major milestones this season. Recent reports suggest Uttar Pradesh’s power requirement has crossed 31,000 MW, nearly double compared to levels seen around 15 years ago.

Residents in several districts have complained about outages and voltage fluctuations, especially during evening peak hours when electricity consumption rises sharply.

Heatwave Driving Record Electricity Demand

India’s overall peak electricity demand has already reached record levels this summer. According to reports, the country recently crossed more than 270 GW in peak power demand as extreme temperatures continue across northern and central regions.

Major cities are also witnessing unprecedented demand levels:

  • Delhi’s peak demand recently touched over 8,400 MW
  • Mumbai recorded demand around 4,500 MW
  • Punjab reported a significant increase in power consumption during May due to temperatures above 43°C

Experts say evening hours remain the biggest challenge for the grid because solar power generation falls after sunset while cooling demand continues to remain high.

Why Power Cuts Are Happening

Energy experts believe multiple factors are contributing to the current situation:

  • Early and intense summer heatwave
  • Rapid increase in air-conditioner and cooler usage
  • Pressure on thermal power plants
  • Transmission and local grid issues
  • Rising dependence on renewable energy during daytime
  • Higher evening demand after solar output declines

Reports from several states also indicate that some thermal power units are operating under stress or facing operational issues, further affecting electricity supply.

Government and Utilities Monitoring Situation

Power distribution companies and state utilities are closely monitoring demand patterns and trying to maintain uninterrupted supply. Authorities have urged consumers to use electricity responsibly during peak hours to reduce pressure on the grid.

India currently has an installed power generation capacity of more than 530 GW, but experts say managing supply during sudden peak demand spikes remains a major challenge, especially during extreme weather conditions.
