NITI Aayog has unveiled a comprehensive roadmap aimed at transforming India’s bioeconomy into a USD 2.6 trillion sector by 2047. The report outlines strategies to accelerate biotechnology innovation, manufacturing and research through coordinated national efforts.
According to the roadmap, India’s bioeconomy could expand to USD 691 billion by 2035 through mission-mode implementation, regulatory reforms and increased public-private collaboration. The report estimates the sector could generate more than 30 million high-value jobs.
The policy framework recommends establishing a ₹50,000 crore BioEconomy Growth Fund to support innovation, infrastructure development, startup funding and commercial-scale biomanufacturing. It also calls for stronger coordination among ministries and regulatory agencies.
NITI Aayog highlighted the growing convergence of biotechnology with artificial intelligence, robotics and computational biology as the next major technological revolution. India aims to position itself among the world’s top three biotechnology powers.
The report notes that India’s bioeconomy has already expanded from USD 10 billion in 2014 to over USD 195 billion in 2025. It believes early investments and policy support can help India emerge as a global leader in biological innovation.
