Sustained cooperation among competition authorities of the BRICS countries will be essential to develop effective and future-ready approaches to competition law enforcement, Competition Commission of India (CCI) Chairperson Ravneet Kaur said.
Kaur made the remarks during a meeting of the heads of BRICS competition authorities held in Udaipur, Rajasthan, on Saturday. The meeting was organised by the Competition Commission of India as India continues to hold the BRICS chairmanship.
Representatives from the BRICS competition authorities exchanged views on recent developments in competition law and policy across their respective jurisdictions. Discussions also covered major enforcement initiatives and emerging competition challenges in domestic markets.
A key focus of the meeting was the renewable energy sector. The participants presented findings from a collaborative study titled “Emerging Competition Landscape in the Renewable Energy Sector in BRICS”, examining the evolving competitive environment in one of the world’s fastest-growing industries.
Addressing the meeting, Kaur highlighted the increasingly cross-border nature of digital markets and emerging technologies. She stressed that greater knowledge-sharing and cooperation between competition authorities would be important for developing informed regulatory approaches capable of addressing new challenges.
The CCI chairperson also emphasised that continued cooperation could help create fair and competitive renewable energy markets while supporting the broader goals of sustainable economic growth and energy security.
The heads of the BRICS competition authorities subsequently adopted a joint statement titled “Strengthening Cooperation to Promote Fair Competition, including in Renewable Energy Markets.”
The growing importance of renewable energy has increased the need for competition authorities to closely monitor market developments, particularly as countries expand investments in clean energy infrastructure and technologies.
India’s leadership in the BRICS grouping is expected to provide further opportunities for cooperation on competition policy, digital markets and emerging sectors. The country will host the BRICS leaders’ summit in New Delhi in September, bringing together leaders of the member countries.
