New Delhi: State-owned telecom operator BSNL has launched a satellite phone in India, offering voice calling and messaging services in areas where conventional mobile networks are unavailable. The handset is priced at ₹1,34,166, including taxes.
Unlike standard smartphones that depend on nearby cellular towers, the BSNL satellite phone connects directly to communication satellites, enabling reliable connectivity in remote locations such as mountains, deserts, border regions, offshore areas and disaster-affected zones.
The device is intended for specialised users, including defence personnel, maritime operators, emergency response teams, mining companies, remote industrial workers and adventure travellers who require uninterrupted communication beyond the reach of terrestrial networks.
BSNL said the satellite phone has been developed in collaboration with global satellite network provider Inmarsat, allowing users to make voice calls and send SMS even in areas without mobile coverage.
The company also clarified that satellite phones are subject to strict regulations in India. Anyone wishing to purchase or use the device must first obtain authorisation from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). Unauthorised satellite phones cannot be legally imported or operated within the country.
Apart from BSNL, international satellite communication providers such as Iridium and Thuraya can also offer services in India, provided users receive the necessary government approvals.
