Centre Flags Alleged Disappearance of 40 Lakh Tonnes of Coal Worth ₹1,600 Crore at SCCL, Urges Telangana Government to Conduct Urgent Inquiry

Union Coal Minister G. Kishan Reddy has written to Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy seeking an urgent inquiry into reports alleging the disappearance of 40 lakh tonnes of coal worth approximately ₹1,600 crore from the state-run mining company, Singareni Collieries Company Limited.
In a letter dated June 10, 2026, the Union Minister referred to media reports claiming that a large quantity of coal had gone missing, resulting in significant financial losses for the company. He expressed concern that the allegations could further weaken SCCL’s financial position at a time when the company is already burdened by unpaid dues exceeding ₹51,500 crore from the Telangana government.
SCCL is jointly owned by the Telangana government and the Centre, with equity participation of 51 percent and 49 percent, respectively.
The minister warned that if the allegations are not examined promptly, they could adversely affect the company’s growth, sustainability, and financial stability. He urged the state government to ascertain the facts and determine whether the reported irregularities have any basis.
Reddy also called for a review of the company’s internal safeguards and control mechanisms to ensure effective operations and prevent potential lapses in the future. He suggested deploying technology-based monitoring systems and conducting periodic audits to identify weaknesses at an early stage.
According to the minister, such measures would help close systemic gaps, prevent recurrence of irregularities, and improve SCCL’s transparency, efficiency, and credibility.
The Union Minister further sought the personal intervention of the Telangana Chief Minister to ensure the smooth functioning of SCCL and protect the welfare of employees and stakeholders associated with the company.
