The Government of India will meet Meta’s global leadership on August 5 and 6 to discuss several critical concerns related to platform accountability, child safety, algorithmic transparency and compliance with Indian regulations.
According to IT Secretary S Krishnan, the government will question Meta over its handling of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), content moderation practices, algorithmic bias and the temporary restriction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Facebook post earlier this year.
The Centre believes that a global technology company such as Meta should possess the technological capability to prevent such lapses and maintain robust safeguards, particularly for verified public figures.
Officials will also seek clarification on how Meta plans to improve compliance with Indian laws, strengthen oversight mechanisms and prevent similar incidents in the future.
The meeting follows increasing regulatory scrutiny of Meta after concerns related to paid advertisements containing CSAM on Instagram and the brief removal of the Prime Minister’s post, which the company later attributed to an automated system error.
The government has maintained that platform accountability, public order and national security remain key priorities and expects Meta’s global leadership to provide detailed explanations regarding its policies and technology.
