New Delhi, May 27: Red Balloon Aerospace has successfully launched India’s first indigenous super-pressure balloon (SPB), marking a significant milestone in the country’s near-space and aerospace technology sector.

The balloon, named “VISTA,” was launched from Vijayawada and carried commercial payloads from seven national and international partners.

Balloon Reached 25 km Altitude

According to the company, the super-pressure balloon ascended to an altitude of nearly 25 kilometres above the Earth’s surface during the mission.

SPBs are high-altitude balloons designed to maintain internal pressure greater than the surrounding atmosphere, allowing them to remain stable at high altitudes and carry payloads for extended periods.

CVS Kiran said the mission was aimed at demonstrating India’s indigenous SPB design and material capabilities, which had not been achieved before in the country.

Alternative to Traditional Satellites

The company highlighted that super-pressure balloons can offer several advantages compared to conventional satellites, especially in terms of cost, flexibility, and deployment speed.

Sireesh Pallikonda explained that SPBs operate much closer to Earth compared to low-Earth orbit and geostationary satellites, enabling higher-resolution imaging and faster data transmission.

He added that such platforms can be deployed quickly in areas where traditional telecom towers or satellite-based infrastructure may not be practical or cost-effective.

Potential Uses Across Multiple Sectors

According to the company, SPBs can support a wide range of applications, including:

Telecommunications coverage
Disaster management operations
Industrial network monitoring
Strategic and spatial observation
Connectivity in remote and hilly regions

The balloons typically operate in the stratosphere at altitudes between 20 and 40 kilometres above Earth.

Expansion Plans Ahead

Red Balloon Aerospace said the current mission is expected to remain airborne for around 24 hours, though the company ultimately aims to develop balloons capable of staying aloft for several months.

The startup plans to launch between 12 and 16 such missions during the current financial year through rideshare and dedicated commercial services.

Industry experts say the development reflects India’s growing capabilities in aerospace innovation, near-space technologies, and alternative communication platforms.
