India and Argentina are looking to significantly expand their economic partnership as bilateral trade crossed $6.5 billion in 2025, registering annual growth of more than 17%.
The two countries reaffirmed their commitment during the fourth India-Argentina Joint Trade Committee meeting held in Buenos Aires on August 24, 2026. The Indian delegation was led by Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal, while Argentina was represented by Fernando Brun, Secretary for International Economic Relations.
India has emerged as Argentina’s fifth-largest trading partner. During the meeting, both countries reviewed progress on the roadmap agreed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Argentina in 2025 and explored ways to diversify bilateral trade.
Investment opportunities in mining, energy and infrastructure featured prominently in the discussions. India’s KABIL has made progress on lithium mining activities in Catamarca, including the completion of Phase II drilling. The company is also exploring opportunities in Salta and Jujuy.
Agricultural market access was another key focus. Technical discussions on sanitary and phytosanitary requirements are underway for Indian products including onions, milk and dairy products, grapes, potatoes, bananas and pulses.
The pharmaceutical sector could also see greater access. Argentina has committed to work towards upgrading India from Annex II to Annex I under its pharmaceutical regulatory framework and reducing entry barriers. Both sides also agreed to strengthen cooperation in Ayurveda and Yoga.
Emerging sectors such as aviation, space technology, telecommunications, 5G, artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure were identified as new areas for collaboration.
The two countries also discussed the India-MERCOSUR Preferential Trade Agreement, including progress on its Terms of Reference and adoption of digital certificates of origin.
Following the JTC, the India-Argentina Business Forum was held on August 25. Agrawal led India’s first and largest business delegation to Argentina, comprising more than 25 business leaders. The delegation explored opportunities across agriculture, minerals, energy, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, tourism, banking and telecommunications.
