New Delhi: Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), India’s flagship financial inclusion programme, has completed 12 years with more than 59 crore accounts and deposits exceeding ₹3.16 lakh crore, highlighting the expansion of formal banking across rural and underserved sections of the country.
Launched on August 28, 2014, PMJDY was designed to provide unbanked adults access to basic banking services without minimum balance requirements or maintenance charges. As of August 19, 2026, 59.09 crore accounts had been opened under the programme, according to the Ministry of Finance.
The geographical and demographic distribution remains a key feature of the scheme. Women account holders number 32.92 crore, representing 55.7% of all Jan Dhan accounts, while 45.95 crore accounts, or 77.8%, are located in rural and semi-urban areas.
Deposits Rise to ₹3.17 Lakh Crore
Total deposits in PMJDY accounts have reached ₹3,16,514 crore. The government said deposits have expanded about 12.8 times over the past 12 years, while the total number of accounts has grown around 2.3 times compared with August 2015.
Average deposits per account have also increased substantially, reaching ₹5,356 as of August 19. The average balance has grown around 3.4 times over the period, indicating increased usage of accounts and savings among beneficiaries.
Digital access has expanded alongside account ownership. Banks have issued 41.29 crore RuPay cards to PMJDY account holders. Each account comes with a free RuPay debit card carrying accident insurance cover of ₹2 lakh, while eligible account holders can access an overdraft facility of up to ₹10,000.
JAM Strengthens Direct Transfers
PMJDY also forms a core part of India’s Jan-Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile, or JAM, framework. Linking bank accounts with Aadhaar and mobile connectivity has allowed welfare benefits to be transferred directly to beneficiaries, reducing dependence on intermediaries.
Jan Dhan customers can also access insurance and pension programmes, including Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana. Banking histories and savings patterns can further help eligible customers access formal credit, including MUDRA loans.
Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said the programme’s impact extends beyond the number of accounts opened, pointing to its role in bringing financial services closer to previously excluded citizens.
As PMJDY enters its 13th year, the government’s focus is expected to move further towards active account usage, savings, credit access, insurance, pensions and digital transactions while expanding formal financial services across underserved communities.
